Agencies |.- Why do people love watching thrillers? Because it's an inventive genre. It has a great combination of suspense, twists and puzzles on which to build a fascinating, intricate plot. Sharp-as-nails movie grabs the viewer's attention and gives a lot of food for thought. Who, after all, is behind the actions of the antagonist? How to stay on the side of the protagonist, when there is such a charismatic anti-hero? How will the character be able to overcome so many difficulties and obstacles? Perhaps thriller is the most venturesome genre, bringing as many emotions as sportsbook betting or roller coasters, which is why we find it so interesting to watch.
If you too are a fan of thrillers and don't miss new movies by Villeneuve and Fincher, then here are 8 cool movies in your favorite genre.
The Jacket (2005)
A claustrophobic thriller starring Adrien Brody, whose hero is admitted to a mental institution and subjected to brutal torture under the guise of an experimental treatment. In the process, he discovers his ability to see things that haven't happened yet. There is a time paradox in the movie, which makes the plot even more unpredictable.
Dogville (2003)
Lars von Trier's picture is about a girl who finds herself in a tiny settlement called Dogville. The friendly locals offer the heroine to stay in their community to live and work. At first all goes well, but over time the locals begin to behave strangely. What lies behind their kindness? You have to love Trier's movies to understand the context better. His films may seem unpredictable and shocking, but they're also particularly fascinating.
Prisoners (2013)
You might think that Denis Villeneuve mostly shoots sci-fi, but among his best works, there are many dramatic thrillers. For example, Prisoners, where the plot involves two girls being kidnapped on Thanksgiving, their parents immediately go to the police and a young detective takes over the search for the children. Under suspicion is a man who has already been prosecuted for similar crimes, but is everything as simple as it seems? Can the detective and the desperate father find the missing girls? The movie is quite heavy, with a drawn-out plot, but it's watchable in the same breath.
The Machinist (2004)
The role of Trevor Resnick is one of the most striking reincarnations of Christian Bale. He specifically lost 30 kilograms to play a mechanic machine operator who suffers from insomnia. Constantly somewhere between reality and dreams, the character is overcome by strange, frightening thoughts and terrifying events. The movie's somber tone and gradually escalating insanity make viewers wonder, is everything really happening or just in Trevor's fevered mind?
Joker (2019)
A new take on the story of the famous anti-hero of the DC universe. Todd Phillips presents us not with a psychopathic killer with crazy laughs and deadly "jokes," but with a hunted, mentally unstable man who is haunted by cruelty and injustice in his life. Events force Arthur Fleck to harden and change in order to survive and avenge his experiences of bullying and abuse. Phillips' Joker, played by the terrific Joaquin Phoenix, is the best character ever created, even though Heath Ledger is considered canonical in the ranks of fans.
Primal Fear (1996)
A young churchman is accused of murdering an archbishop. The kid claims he's innocent, even though all the evidence points to him. A famous Chicago lawyer decides to help him, even though the case seems lost beforehand. The film is popular among fans of the genre because of the cool twist and gorgeous acting by the young Edward Norton.
Shutter Island (2009)
This is one of those rare cases where the suspense lasts until the finale and even after watching it you don't immediately understand what actually happened. In the story, two bailiffs arrive on a dingy island in a clinic for mentally ill criminals to investigate the disappearance of one of their patients. She couldn't simply escape, because the island is surrounded by miles of water and is also heavily guarded. She couldn't have disappeared, could she? And what is the staff at the clinic hiding? It's up to the characters of Leo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo to find out. The film's mystical plot is filled with strange characters and mysterious events that must be followed closely to figure out its denouement.
The Game (1997)
The protagonist, played by the brilliant Michael Douglas, finds himself drawn into a certain Game, the rules of which are unknown. All he knows is that several of his acquaintances have participated in it and ended up happy. It's hard to know at what point the Game began and when it will end, but the protagonist keeps acting to find out what awaits him in the finale. This is a tense, convoluted thriller by David Fincher, a true master of the genre. In some ways, the movie has become a classic and has set the right direction for other, equally talented directors.
