Agencies |.- If you’ve ever played or overheard a game of bingo before, you’ll probably be familiar with a few of the bingo lingo phrases associated with the numbers which are called out during the exhilarating game of bingo. Bingo strategies can be extremely fun and part of the fun is the bingo lingo and the funny phrases that have developed over the years and thanks to the internet and online bingo, new bingo lingo is popping up all the time in online bingo chat rooms and used by savvy players.
Memorable bingo calls
In the UK the most popular game of bingo is the 90-ball game which has meant that in the UK there are over 90 classic bingo calls which fall into the category of bingo lingo and they come in all shapes and sizes and have been influenced by many generations of players, different cultures and regional references. Here are some of the most memorable which are usually remembered because they rhyme with their correlating number!
Garden Gate - Number 8!
To meet someone at the garden gate used to be code for a secret meeting point used by smugglers and this could be where this phrase came from.
Rugby Team - Number 15!
This call was inspired by the number of players in a standard rugby union team.
Dancing Queen - Number 17!
Inspired by the hit 70s song by Abba, Dancing Queen of course, which has a line in it “You are the Dancing Queen, young and sweet, only 17!”
Danny La Rue - Number 52!
Named after the famous and popular Irish singer and drag artist Danny La Rue which was a very popular figure in pop-culture in the 70s.
Tickety Boo! - Number 62!
This phrase is used by some Brits and it essentially means “all good!” so if someone says something is tickety boo it means it’s in good order.
There are also many bingo calls which come from how the number itself looks in terms of its shape, for example, two little ducks for number 22 because the number two resembles the shape of a duck and of course “Legs 11” for number 11 comes from the two ones looking like two legs - sometimes followed by a whistle for those who appreciate a good pair of legs, presumably!
Unfashionable bingo lingo
Times change and there are some parts of bingo lingo that have fallen out of fashion as society moves on and our culture becomes a more diverse and rich mixing pot, such as “two fat ladies” for number 88 which for many people doesn’t have a place in our modern society for shaming women’s body shapes - preferring instead to keep bingo lingo positive, fun and inoffensive so all players can enjoy it! There are also other phrases which were once popular which aren’t used much because they aren’t culturally relevant anymore, for example, 56 - “was she worth it?” because the cost of a marriage license back in the 50s was five shillings and sixpence, something which many players, especially younger generations may not know!.
